Medicine and the Social Contract

Robert M. Arnold, MD, is the Leo H. Criep Chair in Patient Care and professor of medicine in the Division of General Internal Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, UPMC Health System.

Richard L. Cruess, MD, an orthopaedic surgeon and former Dean of Medicine of McGill University, Montreal, Quebec, remains on the faculty and is also a member of the Centre for Medical Education at McGill. He and Sylvia Cruess are consultants with an international group of scholars on the American Board of Internal Medicine's Medical Professionalism Project and have spoken and written extensively on the subject of professionalism.

Sylvia R. Cruess, MD, an endocrinologist, is on the Faculty of Medicine of McGill University and is a member of its Centre for Medical Education. She was formerly director of professional service of the Royal Victoria Hospital.

Martin Donohoe, MD, is medical director of Old Town Clinic and adjunct lecturer in the Department of Community Health at Portland State University, Portland, Ore.

Paul Farmer, MD, PhD, founding director of Partners In Health, is professor of medical anthropology in the Department of Social Medicine at the Harvard Medical School.

Jack P. Freer, MD, is associate professor at University at Buffalo, The State University of New York, School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.

Mandy Garber, MD, MPH, is a fellow in medical ethics within the Section of Palliative Care and Medical Ethics in the Division of General Internal Medicine, at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.

Christopher D. Hoy, MD, is the medical director of the home dialysis program and assistant medical director of the Rubin Dialysis Center, Saratoga Springs, New York.

Azza M. Jayaprakash, MS, is a law student at DePaul College of Law. She has also worked as a research fellow at the National Institutes of Health and the Yale Center for Structural Biology.

Alan H. Lockwood, MD, is professor of neurology and nuclear medicine at University at Buffalo, The State University of New York, School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences, and is chairman, Environment and Health Committee, Physicians for Social Responsibility, Washington, DC.

Nancy H. Nielsen, MD, PhD, is an internist who is senior associate dean for medical education at the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York, School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. She is speaker of the House of Delegates of the American Medical Association.

Theme Issue Editor

David R. Block will graduate in May 2004 from the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York, School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. where he is a member of the school's Professional Conduct Committee. He received his BA with honors from Brown University in biomedical ethics and biology. He will return to Brown to begin residency training in psychiatry in July 2004. He plans a career as a child and adolescent psychiatrist.
