Ethics and Innovation in Surgery

Ethics Poll

Surgeons' skills improve as they gain experience with certain techniques and devices. Which best describes how much information you think a patient should have about the surgeon's experience with the technique or device he or she will use on that patient?
Medical device companies often provide assistance to surgeons who are using new devices. Service representatives who are knowledgeable about the product but are not MDs even observe and advise in the operating room during surgery. Which of the following best describes how you would feel about this practice if you were the patient?
Some European countries have national registries to monitor the effects of orthopaedic implants and the frequency of surgical repairs to and replacements of those implants. Do you think the U.S. should create and fund a similar surgical device registry?
