Pediatric Palliative Care

Ethics Poll

Answer the questions below about a 10-year-old child who has an illness that will cause his death and is expected to do so within the next 24 months. Until cardiac arrest occurs, the child is well enough to attend school and play with friends, and doing so is in his best interest.

DNAR [do not attempt resuscitation] orders are on file so that the child will not be put through futile resuscitation efforts if the arrest takes place in the hospital or at home. The parents want a DNAR order in place at school, too, in case the arrest happens there. Which of the following best expresses your thoughts about having a DNAR order in the child's school?
As the parent of the 10-year old described above, would you talk with him about his expected death?
