Profile of a Role Model
Inge Genefke, MD
Inge Genefke, a physician who formed the first Amnesty International medical group in Denmark, is honored for being an exemplary role model in medicine for her pioneering clinical research and humanitarian advocacy for torture survivors.
The need for treatment and rehabilitation then led, in 1982, to the establishment of the Rehabilitation and Research Centre for Torture Victims (RCT) in Copenhagen, with Dr. Genefke as medical director. In 1986, the International Rehabilitation Council for Torture Victims (IRCT) was established by RCT to foster the growth of rehabilitation centers worldwide. Today over 120 centres throughout the world provide treatment for thousands of torture survivors by helping them look to the future, and think about rebuilding their lives. The intelligence of Dr. Genefke and her team is "a tonic in itself - one for which the demand is far too great."
For her pioneering clinical research and humanitarian advocacy for torture survivors throughout the world, we are honored to present Dr. Inge Genefke with the Virtual Mentor Award for being an exemplary role model in medicine.
We invite students to nominate a physician role model who, for them, has been an outstanding teacher by example. Students might, for example, describe in detail a single experience with a role model that was particularly meaningful to them, or describe a series of patient-related experiences with a role model that influenced their ethical development. In describing their experiences, we encourage students to examine why it was significant to them and how it may influence their professional behavior.
Each month, we will select profiles of role models to post in this space, and those selected will receive a gift of appreciation.
Nominations should include the following information:
1. Student's name, address, phone, e-mail, and medical school
