About the Journal

Ceasing publication after more than 25 years in December 2025, the AMA Journal of Ethics is an editorially independent, peer-reviewed journal devoted to helping medical students, physicians and all health care professionals navigate ethical decisions in service to patients and the public. Each monthly issue focused on a specific theme topic, such as palliative psychiatry, health care and homelessness, socially situated brain death, and the global burden of cancer inequality. Theme topics are explored through cases with expert commentaries; health law and policy articles; social, cultural and historical analyses; arts and humanities perspectives; and podcasts and video content. Previously published content is maintained on this site and will remain freely available to all in keeping with our guiding premise that ethics inquiry is a public good.
