James Downs, PhD is the Gilder Lehrman-National Endowment for the Humanities Professor of Civil War Era Studies and History at Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania. He is the author of Maladies of Empire: How Colonialism, Slavery, and War Transformed Medicine (Harvard University Press, 2021).

Rae Anne Martinez, PhD, MSPH is a population health postdoctoral fellow at the Minnesota Population Center at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis.
