Quality of life (QoL) assessments have roles in a wide range of ethical discussions about health care services’ effectiveness. In clinical contexts, how we assign value to QoL can lead to conflicts among patients, surrogate decision makers, and clinicians. In bioethical discourse on new “reconstructive” forms of transplantation, variables affecting QoL for patients have yet to be systematically examined. This issue explores the ethics of assessing and representing QoL-related issues in reconstructive transplantation.
