Ethics of Global Health “Immersion” in Health Professions Education

Many health professions schools offer their students global health “immersion” learning opportunities in low-resource settings. Such opportunities can reinforce students’ sense of calling and foster cross-cultural sensitivity. However, programs relying on short-term fixes to long-standing infrastructure and resource deficits can exploit some of the world’s most vulnerable, poor patients. This issue investigates risks and benefits of immersion models of health professions education.
